A 32-year-old Mountain View man remains hospitalized after being shot Saturday morning while hunting in Puna.
Police say Jarret Kaneshiro is in stable condition at The Queen’s Medical Center in Honolulu.
“The prognosis is good,” said Capt. Randall Medeiros, commander of the Hilo Criminal Investigation Section.
Puna patrol officers and Fire Department personnel responded to a report of an apparently accidental shooting at approximately 6:56 a.m. Saturday.
Medeiros said that Kaneshiro suffered a gunshot wound to the torso from a large-caliber rifle. He was taken first to Hilo Medical Center and subsequently flown in critical condition to The Queen’s Medical Center, where his condition has since improved.

Kaneshiro had been hunting with at least one other individual on private property near the Mauna Loa Macadamia Nut Corp. facility in Keaau, Medeiros said.
Detectives are investigating the shooting as a public accident.
Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to call the Criminal Investigation Section at 961-2255.
Those who prefer anonymity may call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300. All Crime Stoppers information is kept confidential.
